Clos Du Val Winery: All The Wines You Need For Your Next Holiday Celebration
The holidays are upon us and it really isn’t a holiday celebration without wine! Clos Du Val Winery has been crafting award winning wines since 1972. Having personally grown up in the Carneros region across the street from their Grand Val Vineyard, we were blessed to have a close relationship with their Vineyard Manager who generously gifted my family with their wines over the years, meaning my family’s celebrations were synonymous with Clos Du Val wines! If you and or your parents are collectors or connoisseurs, I am sure this is not the first time you are hearing of this classic Stags Leap wine house! They are famous for having won the Judgement of Paris rematch in 1986 with their inaugural 1972 release of their Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon that was grown on the same estate vineyard they source from today!
Since Clos Du Val Winery was built in the 1970s their tasting room was due for a little face lift, as many are that have been around since then. They hired a team of designers and architects to craft what is now a modern, state-of-the-art tasting room and outdoor space for guests to enjoy those beautiful wines they have been making for many years, in the lap of luxury. They included elements of the past into the design with old barrel staves used as part of the walls in the tasting room and floor to ceiling glass windows to gaze into their estate vineyard. They seemed to have thought of everything! I personally love the private rooms that can be used for large group tastings, they are tucked away and create the perfect ambiance to make your group feel like VIP’s. Their patio might be my new favorite outdoor space in all of Napa Valley, it comes equipped with a fire place and a stylish lounge area, if you are a member of their Coterie wine clubthey even have a private area outside just for you!
I definitely suggest going for a visit now more than ever, so you can find the perfect wine to pair with your holiday meal. We all know finding that wine can be a daunting task for the host, especially when you have so many other elements to worry about; the food, the ambiance and of course the newly minted vegan who decides to tell you last minute while you scramble to accommodate them! Wine shouldn’t be that difficult and after a quick review and or tasting at Clos Du Val you will realize that they produce every varietal you would want to pair with holiday meals, ranging from the classic Pinot Noir and turkey combination to Cabernet Sauvignon paired with Prime Rib. Trust me, this is a painful post to write as this year I won’t be enjoying as much or any wine given I will be giving birth just a few months after.
If you are looking for a great white wine pairing for your Thanksgiving feast, I highly suggest checking out the Clos Du Val Carneros Estate Chardonnay or the Rosé of Pinot Noir. For red wine lovers the Grand Val Vineyard Pinot Noir would be an obvious choice since it is such a classic pairing with turkey and many Thanksgiving side dishes. However sometimes Pinot Noir can be a bit too light for the heavier red wine drinker (you know those people who say the more tannins the better) so I would suggest then getting your hands on their small production Estate Merlot which also comes from the Grand Val Vineyard in Carneros. I can’t get enough of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon grown in cooler regions and this Merlot is a quintessential expression of the region, juicy ripe cherry and blackberry. Notes of cedar, blackberry and pronounced yet well integrated tannins. It is truly representative of the cooler climate where the fruit is grown.
The great thing about Clos Du Val’s variety of wines is you can literally order a mixed caseand call it a day, or maybe two, depending on how many people are coming over! The best part of visiting, you can take your wines home right then and not have to worry about waiting for the FedEx guy to deliver! However if you are planning to ship any wines, make sure you place your order early and let them know you want to enjoy for the holidays so they get that order out asap!
I personally can’t wait to revisit when the time comes and enjoy sipping a glass of Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon with girlfriends or my family, I know I am truly blessed to be able to hop in the car and be there within 15 minutes. Make sure to add them to your list of wineries to visit on your next trip to Napa Valley!
